November 2011 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM.
Present: Lori “Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Joan Sculli.
The minutes of the October meeting were read. Debbie moved and Joan seconded the motion for their approval. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Savings account $6,544.09 and checking account $507.55. David moved and Karen seconded the motion for approval of the report as given by Lori. The motion passed.
Shirley hopes to return as treasurer.
Book sale: Book sale for November brought in $217.00.
Raffle brought in $11.00. The winner was drawn. Membership brought in $70.00. Karen called those members who have not renewed.
Discussion ensued regarding a membership drive. Ideas to advance the friends. Joan came up with several suggestions.
Discussion of a Friends’ representative attending library board meetings. We discussed a holiday party on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the wing.
Next meeting is Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the library. The meetings begin at 4:30 PM. All friends are invited.
Motion to adjourn was made. Meeting adjourned at 5:40 PM.

October minutes

MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY Thursday, October 27 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 P.M.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President) David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Joan Sculli, Felizia Bushkin and Barbara Goldberg.
The minutes of the September meeting were read. Barbara moved and Felizia seconded the motion for approval of the minutes. The motion passed.

Report of the Treasurer: Lori Stayer gave the report. Savings account $6,246.09 and checking account $507.55. David moved and Karen seconded the motion that the report of the treasurer be approved. The motion passed.
Old Business: The book sale averaged $61.00 per week from September 21, to the present. The next weeding will be on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
Membership: Karen reported that twenty members have not renewed. She will follow up with a telephone call.
The raffle brought in $56.00. The winner was called. The next raffle will include a gift certificate. Diane will be selling raffle tickets on Wednesday, November 9 and Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the library in the morning.
Karen notified Lois (Publicity Chair) that an ad for the book sale running in the Long Island Woman in the October and November issue is outdated. Lois has emailed the paper with the new ad.
Debbie showed a picture of the lamp the library will purchase for the wing.
Any communication from Debbie should go to the President and Vice President of the Friends.
Lori has the appropriate tax forms and she will complete them.
If any officer resigns an official letter must be presented to the bank. The President would submit in writing any change of officers in the organization.
The request was made that the heat be turned on at the wing prior to the Friends book sale on Wednesday.
Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, book sale will not take place on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Debbie will provide a sign stating the above.
The Friends will meet at 2:30 P.M. from November 2011 through March 2012.
Our next meeting will be Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 2:30 P.M. All friends are invited to attend.

Minutes from September Meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35P.M.
Present: Lori Stayer (President) Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R.Stayer (Secretary), Lois Calame (Publicity Chair), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Joan Sculli, Felizia Bushkin, Barbara Goldberg and Carol Fontana.
Minutes for the August meeting were read. Lois moved and Joan seconded that the minutes be approved. Motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Lori Stayer gave the report. Savings account $5,588.09. Checking account $407.55. David moved and Karen seconded that the report of the treasurer be accepted. Motion passed.
The book sale is doing well. We are asking that books only be donated during the hours the sale is in progress. The next weeding will be Wednesday, October 12, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Committee Reports: Karen reported that 25 out of 70 members have not yet renewed. Follow up calls will be made in late October.
The raffle brought in $85.00. The name of the winner was drawn and called.
Marion has sent a sympathy card to Barbara Bernstein in behalf of the Friends. A thinking of you card will be sent to Barbara Perlman.
Lois continues to keep on top of the notices of our book sale for the local newspapers.
The cookbook was discussed. It will be expensive to print copies of the cookbook and Merrick Library personnel cannot sell it for us, but we can sell it along with our monthly raffle. After much discussion we have decided to not sell the cookbook for now.
There is still a lighting problem in the parlor at the wing. Debbie will pursue this along with the ongoing problem of the sign not being visible.
We can pay for the museum passes in March of 2012.
Lori requested the form for last year’s Friend’s tax return.
Our next meetings are Thursday, October 27, November 17, December 15, 2011 and January 19, 2012. All meetings begin at 4:30 p.m. and all Friends are invited to attend.
Lois moved for adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 p.m.

Minutes of August 18, 2011 meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 2011

Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 P.M.

Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Felizia Bushkin and Joan Sculli.

The minutes of the July meeting were read. Joan moved and Debbie seconded the motion that they be approved. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Savings Account $4658.50. Checking Account $342.59. Karen moved and Joan seconded the motion to approve the report. Motion passed.
An invoice of $10 was paid to the Merrick Library.
Book Sale: The book sale brings in about $70.00 per week.
Committee reports:
Membership: Karen reported that 32 out of 70 members have renewed. She will follow up with a 2nd letter in September. Karen showed us an example of a membership form and book marker given to her by Diane Christi used for the Friends of the Southampton Library. We decided that putting the membership form on the back of the book markers and adding “new or renewal” to the current membership form were two good ideas.
The raffle of the 2 baseball books brought in $40.00. The winner was called. The September raffle will be a cookbook and a gift certificate to a local establishment.
No report from the Correspondence Committee, but Marion was given Friends’ Stationery.
Old Business:
Because of a change in their policy, the American Museum of Natural History is no longer issuing passes. Debbie will check to see if we are due any refund.
New Business:
Karen will take the recipe cookbook fundraiser to various printers. She will ascertain the cost of 100 copies.
Diane Christi has agreed to sell the raffles the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at the library.
Lori requested a lamp in the parlor at the wing.
Debbie asked for a Friends volunteer for Tuesday, August 23, 2011, to help with a library program at the wing from 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. Lori and David will attend.
The next weeding will take place on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 A.M. at the wing.
Our next meeting will be Thursday, September 22, 2011 at 4:30 P.M. at the Merrick Library. All Friends are invited to attend.
Karen moved for adjournment and the motion was seconded. The meeting was adjourned at 5:25 P.M.

Minutes from July 2011 meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JULY 21, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:38 p. m.

Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Lois Calame (Publicity Chair) and Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair).
The minutes of the June meeting were read. Karen moved and Lois seconded their approval. The motion passed.

Report of the Treasurer: Savings Account $4,066.21, Checking $351.39.
David moved and Karen seconded that the report of the treasurer be approved. Motion passed.
Book sale: The Book sale thus far has brought in $144.0. OA has given a donation of $150.

MEMBERSHIP: There were 13 new or renewed members. Karen wil remove OA from our membership list.

OLD BUSINESS: The Janway bill has been paid. Marion Ormsten has requested Friends stationery. She has also requested money for stamps. She has issued thank you letters to the vendors supporting the Friends coffee house in June.
The raffle brought in $19.00 and the winner was called. Baseball books will be raffled off and the winner drawn at our August meeting.

The next book weeding will occur on Thursday, August 18, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 12 p. m.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, August 18, 2011 at 4:30 p.m.
The scheduled meetings are Thursday, September 22, Thursday, October 27, Thursday, November 17 and Thursday, December 15, 2011 beginning at 4:30 p.m.
The motion to adjourn was made and approved. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m.

June 2011 Meeting Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY,JUNE 23, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:33 pm.
• Present: Lori Stayer President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R.Stayer (Secretary) Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Diane Christie and Matthew Feinberg.
The minutes for the May 26, 2011 meeting were read.Karen moved and Debbie seconded that they be aproved. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer Savings Account $4288.21 andChecking Account $1000.00. the Merrick Library receive a $500.00 check to pay for the Nassau County Fine Arts Museum which was not opaid for previously. Diane moved and David Seconded the motion for approval of the report. The motion passed.
Old Business: The book sale has brought in $297.00.
Museum passes are being used.
All libraries may drop the Museum of Natural History since their policy is changing.The current cost is $115.00.
The Coffee House book sale and raffle brought in $200.0 The recommendation is we have a Coffee House next year.
We want to make sure that ten adult books is the limit accepted in one day by each individual. JanWay bags bill received for $385.28. Money wioll be transferred from our savings to our checking account to pay this bill.
Membership: Four new members in June. A $500.00 donation was given by Stephen Gray in the name of his uncle Bob Gray.
Membership letters will go out by the end of July. Diane Christie and Kathryn Luger will call members reminding them of the F”riends monthly meetings.
We have 72 members who will receive renewal leters. We will have an anouncement in the Merrick Library newsletter.
Diane has agreed to volunteer at the Library to sell the Friends raffle the second and fourth Tuesday in July.Marion Ormsten will help on July 26 2011. Weeding date Thursday,July 21, 2011 from 10 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteer schedule for Wednesdays is being coordinated for July and August by Karen.
We would like to have Friends occasionally attend Library Board meetings. Debbie Jones will check dates.
Our next meeting will be Thursday, July 21,2011 at the Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 pm. All Friends are invited to attend. Karen motioned for adjournment. The meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p m.

May 26 FOML Meeting Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY MEETING Thursday, May 26, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 p.m.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Lois Calame (Publicity Chair), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison) and Felizia Bushkin.

The minutes from the previous meeting were read. Marion Ormsten noted that the fact she has gone to several schools and community agencies to post our friends activities last month was not mentioned in the May 5th minutes. Lois moved and Karen seconded approval of the minutes with the correction. The motion passed.

Report of the Treasurer: Karen gave the treasurer’s report. Savings account balance $3,809.85 and checking account balance $5,657.23. David moved and Marion seconded the motion to approve the report of the treasurer. Motion passed.

The Nassau Fine Arts Museum pass for $500.00 was added to the approved list. The total cost for approved museum passes for this year is $5,665.00.

Book Sale: The book sale for the month of May has brought in about $200.00. The next weeding will occur on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. Debbie will update the advertisement for the book markers indicating that a donation of up to ten adult books will be accepted. She will send this to Karen.

Committee Reports: Karen reported that membership renewals will go out from June to August. Raffle drawing Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Coffee House.
We have ordered 250 red bags from Jan Way.
Debbie will make sure the library posts the flyer in the wing window bulletin board about the Coffee House.
Coffee House arrangements were assigned with various Friends seeking donations from community vendors.
Debbie will send an advertisement for the coffee House to Karen. Karen will disseminate this to the Friends through email.
Our next three meetings will be Thursday, June 23, Thursday, July 21 and Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 p.m. All Friends are invited to attend.
Karen moved and Debbie seconded the motion to adjourn. The meeting adjourned at 5:30 p.m.

Because of the bad weather the April meeting was moved to Thursday, May 5, 2011. Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:33 pm.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Anita Gordon, Martha Skorand Diane Christie.
Minutes from the March meeting were read. Anita motioned and Karen seconded the minutes be approved as read. Motion passed.
Report of the treasurer: Karen Tusa gave the report for our treasurer. Savings account $8,858.85 checking account $408.23. David motioned and Marion seconded that the report of the treasurer be accepted. Motion passed.
Book Sale: For the month of April the book sale grossed $244. Expenses in April were $163.
Committee Reports: Two new members were added bringing in $25. The raffle brought in $163 and was drawn on Thursday, April 28, 2011.
The Intrepid was approved as a new museum costing $500 per year. Total cost for approved museum passes $5,165.
Janway will be called to order 250 new bags of a different color. The price for a fill the bag will be raised to $9 once the new bags are used. Debbie Jones will print new book marks. Reminder that books should be dated upon arrival. In the future the Friends will have a table at the library to sell raffles. The next raffle will be drawn on Sunday, June 5, 2011 at the Coffee Shop.
Coffee shop preparations discussed. Various Friends will seek donations from local vendors. Friends can also contribute baked goods. Lori will call The East Meadow Library to see if Mark Breier a comic will be available as part of the entertainment. We are seeking local talent as well. Poets, singers etal are welcome.
David moved and Karen seconded the motion to adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 6:00 pm.

March 2011 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY MEETING THURSDAY, MARCH 24, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:33 P.M.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Debbie Jones (Library Laiason),Lois Calame (Publicity Chair), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Anita Gordon and Katherine Luger.
Minutes of the February meeting were read. Lois moved and Karen seconded THAT THE minutes of THE February meeting be approved. Motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Because our Treasurer Shirley Sherwin is hospitalized, Karen gave the report. Savings account $8,480.00, checking $492.00. It was recommended that our checking account amount be raised to over $500.00. The bank charges have bben returned and apparently removed from the account a ctivity. David moved and Catherine sedconded acceptance of the report of the treasurer. Motion passed.
Committee Reports: marion Ormsten correspondence chair has sent a card to Shirley Sherwin.
Lois Calame will make sure the publicity for our Sunday, June 5, 2011 Coffee Shop begins around Monday, May 2, 2011.
Raffle of the baseball book raised $53.00. The winner was drawn and notified. He is Albert Cereda. Next drawing will be Thursday, April 28, 2011 at our next meeting. The book is about sailing and seamanship. Books for future raffles are being held in the store room at the wing.
Katherine has called 72 members. We will devide up the calling of members to remind them of future activities and upcoming meetings.
The book sale has brought in $279.00. Question about closing on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 P.M. was rejected. Weeding done on Wednesday, March 23, 2011. Next weeding will be done on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. The large art books have been reduced to $5.00 each. Some books are being brought down from upper shelves to be better viewed by customers.
According to library policy we cannot raise money at our book sale for the American Legion. They have been informed.
We have been contacted through the mail by Independent Galleries to consider a fundraiser for the library. Karen will gather more de tails and we will decide at our April meeting.
National Library Week is from Sunday, April 10, through Saturday, April 16, 2011 The friends will have a table on Monday, April 11, Tuesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 14, 2011. We will need volunteers from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 p.m.
The Friends will have a luncheon to celebrate National Volunteer Week on Friday, April 15, 2011.
Debbie Jones raised several issues. First voting for the library budget will occur on Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Second we are being asked to consider funding passes to two additional museums. They are the Folk Art and the Intrepid. Debbie has been asked to furnish statistical data regarding the useage of the passes for the museums we purchased.We will decide at our April meeting.
Lori and David will assist at the Friends table at the Sunday, April 3, 2011 program at the library.
The next meeting of the Friends of the Merick Library will occur on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at 4:30 P.M. at the Merrick Library.

February 2011 Minutes

Minutes for the friends of the Merrick Library meeting Thursday February 17, 2011
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:10 pm.
present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Debbie Jones (Library Liaison), Lois Calame (Public Relations Chair).
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as read. Karen Tusa motioned Debbie Jones seconded. Motion passed.
Report of the treasurer: savings account $7805.80 checking account $501.63. David moved and Lois seconded the report as given by Karen be accepted. Motion passed.
Book sale: American legion wants to participate in the book sale for one day. Can we do this according to library policy? Debbie Jones will check . Most of us feel that we should specifically raise money for the library. Yesterday the book sale brought in $73.
Publicity for the coffee shop scheduled for Sunday,June 5, 2011 should begin two or three weeks before the event. No rare books this time. Debbie will furnish the poster from last year with changes.
MEMBERSHIP One renewal member.
Weeding Friday, February 18, 2011 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 P.M.
Raffle earned $44. Someone won on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Baseball book for March raffle will be drawn on March 24, during our friends meeting. . A thank you card for the $50 gift certificate will be sent by our correspondence chair. Disappearing scissors and the door being left locked with the lights on were discussed.
Next weeding Wednesday,March 23, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 pm.
Suggestion for an additional book sale not approved. Additional meetings Thursday, May 26 and Thursday, June 23.

January Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 2011.
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 pm
Present: Lori Stayer [President], Karen Tusa [Vice President], David R. Stayer [Secretary], Marion Ormsten [Correspondence Chair], Debbie Jones [Library Liaison], Joan Sculli.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Joan Sculli motioned and Karen Tusa seconded. Motion passed. Treasurer's report: Because Shirley Sherwin was not available, Karen Tusa gave the treasurer's report. Savings Account $7833.23 Checking $429.91. A bank charge of $25 was mistakenly charged to our account. Karen Tusa called and the bank has made the correction. David motioned and Karen seconded acceptance of the report of the treasurer. Motion passed. Tax report done and mailed. We will consider changing our fiscal year to January through December. Karen will follow up regarding possible tax problems. David will draft a possible amendment to the Friends bylaws.
New sign is doing its job since more people are coming to buy books. The sign must be moved since it is blocked by a pole. The custodian will be told to properly move the sign.
book sale $154 for January thus far./ Trader Joe raffle $45.00. Book raffle only raised $18. Carla acquired a $50 gift certificate from Nicholas James Bistro. We will raffle a book as well for Valentine's Day. The drawing will occur on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Three books for upcoming raffles. Suggestion that a friend can make the announcement prior to the Sunday programs at the Library when we have a table.
Committee reports: membership quarterly contribution of $150 from OAA. We will have Marion Ormsten our correspondence chair send them a thank you note. She will also send a thank you note to Trader Joe's for their raffle donation. We deleted 18 members from the membership list as of December 31, 2010.
New Business: The Rotary Club will honor Lori as President of the Friends of the Merrick Library at a dinner on Thursday, February 17, 2011 with one of their Leadership Awards.
Our next meeting on February 17 will begin at 4:00 pm. . /Debbie will assist with the new sign for the casement window at the wing.
Motion to allow each person to fill one bag per day at the book sale was made. The motion passed. A small electric tea pot will be purchased by the Friends. Joan Sculli will investigate at Walmart and Lori Stayer will investigate BJ'S.
Friends will have a coffee house may 22, 2011. Need publicity for coffee house. David motioned karen seconded. Motion passed. Next weeding February 23, 2011 at 10:00 a.m.
Library invoices were reviewed. The light bulb problem may be solved.
Motion to adjourn. Joan moved karen seconded. Meeting adjourned 5:35 pm.
