Minutes from September 2012 meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Jonathan Haas (via phone--Business Chair), and Joann Petrowski. Minutes of the August meeting were read. Karen moved and Diane seconded their approval. The motion passed. Old Business: The Better World Books bin is now available at the Wing. It fills up quickly. The book sale netted $41 yesterday, and $212 since our August meeting. Karen reported that the raffle netted $43. From now on Diane will report on the raffle. The winner was drawn and notified. Karen also reported that out of the 73 members contacted, 51 have renewed. Jonathan called in regarding the Business Memberships. He will require one hundred additional brochures. About half of the Chamber of Commerce Business list has been contacted. Publicity for the businesses that become members at $75 will commence in January of 2013. The next weeding will occur Thursday, October 25, 2012 at the Merrick Library Wing from Ten AM to Twelve PM. Joann has agreed to help with the raffle at the library on Tuesday and Friday. She has agreed to assist by calling Friends members prior to our upcoming meetings. Our meetings on Thursday, October 25, 2012 and Thursday, November 29, 2012 will be held in the multipurpose room. The meeting on Thursday, December 20, 2012 will be held in the conference room at the Merrick Library. These meetings will begin at 4:00 PM. All Friends are invited to attend. Minutes of the August 2012 Meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, AUGUST 23, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM." Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary) and Felizia Bushkin. The minutes of the July meeting were read. Karen moved and Felizia seconded their approval. The motion passed. Report of the treasurer: Diane gave the report. Savings account $4,426.02 checking account $355.08. We will transfer from the savings account to assure the checking account has a minimum balance of $500.00. David moved and Karen seconded approval of the report of the treasurer. The motion passed. Book Sale for yesterday netted $50.00. Committee Reports: Karen reported that 73 membership renewal letters were sent and 32 responses have been received. The raffle for this month netted $67.00. The winner was drawn and has been notified. The raffle for September will include cookbooks and a gift certificate from Nicholas James. Jonathan has sent out 40 business membership letters. We will request the list so follow up contacts can be pursued. Lori Karen and Art did weeding today. Mysteries and fiction were the categories done. The Better World Books bin should be arriving next week. Our meetings for Thursday, October 25, Thursday, November 29 and Thursday, December 20, 2012 will begin at 4:00 Pm at the Merrick Library. Our new Publicity Chair is Jay Cincotta. We will send Debbie Jones of the Merrick Library a get well card. The next meeting of the Friends of the Merrick Library is Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 4:30 PM at the Merrick Library. All Friends are invited to attend. July Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Jonathan Haas (Business Chair) and Art Sacharoff. The minutes for the June meeting were read. Karen moved and Art seconded their approval. The motion passed. Ellen Firer came to indicate that Debbie Jones will not be available as Library Liaison and we should contact Ellen directly. Report of the Treasurer: Lori Stayer gave the report of the treasurer since Diane was not available. Savings account $3,538.46 and checking account $601.03. The latest book sale netted $49.00. David moved and Karen seconded the report of the treasurer be approved. The motion passed. Old Business: The Proposed letter to acquire Business membership was approved. The Business Brochure is ready to accompany each letter. Karen reported that the annual membership letter is ready. The letter was read and a membership form will accompany each letter. We are requesting that the members of the Merrick Library Board join the Friends. Karen also reported that this month’s raffle raised $43.00. The raffle winner was drawn and notified. Next month Children’s Books will be raffled. Weeding was done today. Books more then two years old and categories that were unpopular were removed. The library had the wing air conditioner repaired. Marion will send a thinking of you card to Lois. We have been asked to fund the Children’s Museum in New York City for $225.00, and the Cold Spring Harbor Museum for $200.00. This will be considered. Overeaters Anonymous has donated $150.00 to the Friends. A Thank you note will be sent to them. The new officers for the Friends are listed on the Merrick Library web site. Our next meeting is Thursday, August 23, 2012 beginning at 4:30 PM at the Merrick Library. All Friends are invited to attend. June Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JUNE 21, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:36 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary) and Diane Christie. Minutes from the May meeting were read. Diane moved and Karen seconded their approval. The motion passed. Report of the treasurer: Lori gave the report. Savings account $3,287.06 and the checking account has $603.01.David moved and Diane seconded the approval of the report. The motion passed. Committee reports: Karen reported that our membership total number is the same as last month. The raffle drawn at the coffee house brought in $157.00. The winner was notified. The next raffle drawing will take place on Thursday, July 19, 2012. Lori reported the book sale for the last four weeks brought in $171.00. The book sale will close early on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. There will be no book sale on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Marion will be asked to send two get well cards to Lois Calame and Anita Gordon. Elections: As prescribed by the Friend’s Bylaws elections were conducted. The elected officers are: President Lori Stayer, Vice President Karen A. Tusa, Secretary David R. Stayer and Treasurer Diane Christie. The officers will serve for two years. New Business: We discussed the brochure and letter for our new Business Membership. Jonathan as Business Chair will be contacted. There will be an additional weeding on Monday, June 25, 2012 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. The July weeding will be on Thursday, July 19, 2012 from 10:00 “AM to 12:00 PM. The August weeding will be on Thursday, August 23, 2012 and the September weeding will be on Thursday, September 20, 2012. The time is the same as the July weeding. The next three meetings of the Friends of the Merrick Library are Thursday, July 19, 2012, Thursday, August 23, 2012 and Thursday, September 20 2012. Because of September holidays volunteers will be found to cover the book sale on Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Karen moved and Diane seconded that the meeting adjourn. May Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, MAY 24, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:36 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair) and Felizia Bushkin. The minutes were corrected. The checking account had $612.26. The motion to approve the minutes from April was made by Karen and seconded by Felizia. The motion passed. Report of the treasurer: Currently the savings account has $2,459.45 and the checking has $603.01. David moved and Marion seconded the motion for approval of the report of the treasurer. The motion passed. Old Business: The book sale netted 156.00. The next weeding will be Thursday, June 21, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Karen reported that the raffle has brought in $137.00. The raffle will be drawn at the Friends Coffee House. The next raffle will have a book on golf and a gift certificate from Stop and Shop. Karen indicated that we have one new member raising our total to 71. The Coffee House will occur on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the Merrick Library Wing from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Apparently the possible grant to the Friends has been withdrawn. We were informed by the Director of the Merrick Library that we cannot use their computers to advertise our business membership drive. Jonathan was contacted by phone regarding the letter to request our new category of business membership. We will request the statistics regarding museum pass usage by Merrick residents. Marion Ormsten was appointed chair of theb Nominating Committee. The Friends will hold elections on Thursday, June 21, 2012. April Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:31 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Shirley Sherwin (Treasurer), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Felizia Bushkin, Diane Christie, Jonathan Haas and Joan Sculli. The minutes for the March meeting were distributed and read. Karen moved and Shirley seconded the motion for their approval. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: Checking account $512.26 and savings account $2,111.22. The friends transferred $100.00 to the Walter Mintz fund established by the Merrick Library. The bank has a new manager and our account has been changed to a Business One which should eliminate a monthly service charge. David moved and Karen seconded approval of the report of the treasurer. Motion passed. Old Business: book sale this month netted $368.00. Karen reported that the raffle netted $192.00. The winner was drawn and notified. The raffle for next month will be a baseball book and a Trader Joe basket. Our Friends membership is level at 70. Because we recently paid for museum passes, we will request a tabulation of their usage. Jonathan has offered to chart their usage. The Coffee House is on for Wednesday, June 6, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Friends have volunteered to either acquire or bring donations of food and beverage. A schedule was arranged so Friends can be present the entire time since our book sale commences at 1:30 PM. Karen has updated the sign advertising the Coffee House. We are seeking entertainment at the Coffee House specifically poetry. New Business: Lori and Karen held their monthly meeting with the Merrick Library Director. She suggested we consider a Friends Commercial Membership for local businesses. Jonathan and Shirley moved that we charge businesses $75.00. The motion passed. Jonathan Haas has agreed to compose a letter to local businesses. He has been appointed Business Membership Chair. The library will set up a bin to acquire donated books which can possibly be accepted by Better World Books. The friends would receive a percentage of the funds accrued. A motion to raise the cost of a fill a bag to $10.00 was rejected. We received a letter possibly offering the Friends a grant. This will be pursued with the Merrick Library Director. The Friends have decided not to send minutes through the regular mail. The next weeding will occur on Thursday, May 24, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. The next meeting of the Friends will occur on Thursday, May 24, 2012 at the Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 PM. All Friends are invited to attend. The meeting adjourned at 5:50 PM. March 2012 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, MARCH 22, 2012
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:40 PM.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair) and Anita Gordon.
The minutes for the February meeting were read. Karen moved and Anita Seconded they be approved as read. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Savings account $7,921.22 and checking account $506.46.David moved and Marion seconded the motion to approve the report of the treasurer. Motion passed.
From February 29 through March 21, 2012 the book sale netted $128.00.
Karen reported that the raffle brought in $133.00. Art and Diane were commended for their hard work. The winner was drawn and notified.
One new member joined the Friends.
The Coffee Shop will occur from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at the Library Wing. This date has been approved by the Merrick Library Director.
The next weeding is scheduled for Thursday, April 26, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
The next meeting is Thursday, April 26, 2012 beginning at 4:30 PM at the Merrick Library. All Friends are invited to attend.
Our meeting schedule is Thursday, May 24, Thursday, June 21 and Thursday, July 26, 2012.

Minutes of February 2012 meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2012
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:45 PM.
Present: Lori “Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Lois Calame (Publicity Chair), Diane Christi and Anita Gordon.
The minutes of the January meeting were read. Marion moved and Anita seconded their acceptance. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: Savings account $7,286.39 and checking account $511.46. David moved and Anita seconded approval of the report. The motion passed.
The book sale brought in $349.00.
Karen reported that the raffle brought in $95.00. We have one new member bringing our total membership to 70.
Under programs a Library Scavenger Hunt was discussed as a family friendly program. The next book weeding will occur on Thursday, March 22, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the wing.
The Coffee House will probably take place from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM on a week day afternoon.
The Friends will pay for Lori to joint the New York State Library Association costing $55.00.
Lois indicated that the ads are poorly written by some of the local papers.
From Sunday, April 15, through Saturday, April 21, 2012 is National Volunteer Week. The Friends will have a luncheon on Thursday, April 19, 2012 for active volunteers.

Minutes for Meeting of January 19, 2012

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JANUARY 19, 2012
Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:40 PM.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President) (attended by phone), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair) and Lois Calame (Publicity Chair).
The minutes of the December meeting were read. Lois moved and Marion seconded they be app roved. The motion passed.
Report of the Treasurer: savings account $7,347.20 and checking account $505.11. We have received over the past five weeks $332 from the book sale. We received a $150 donation from OA. Karen reported that the raffle brought in $43, and $40 from two new members.
David moved and Lois seconded that the report of the treasurer be approved. Motion passed.
Lois will request a change in the ad in the Pennysaver.
The Friends sent a condolence card to the family of Janet Schneider.
Prior to our meeting Lori and David met with Ellen Firer and Debbie Jones of the Merrick Library. The meeting was productive and cordial. David requested the Library Suggestion form be included in the Merrick Library Newsletter. Debbie will assist with receipts, bookmarks and membership forms.
Ellen suggested that our Friends Coffee Shop take place on a weekday evening from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Merrick Library.
We will consider Friends coverage at Merrick Library Sunday programs.
Friends week will be Sunday, October 21 through Saturday, October 27, 2012.
Our next three meetings of the Friends are scheduled for Thursday, February 23, Thursday, March 22 and Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 PM. All Friends are encouraged to attend

Minutes of the December 2011 Meeting

Minutes for the meeting of the Friends of the Merrick Library Thursday December 15, 2011.

Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM.
Present: Lori Stayer (President), Karen A. Tusa (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Shirley Sherwin (Treasurer), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Joan Sculli and Diane Christie.

The minutes of the November meeting were read. Shirley moved and Karen seconded the motion for their approval. The motion passed.

Report of the Treasurer: Savings and checking total $7,267.20. Book sale has brought in $238 and the raffle netted $49. The winner was picked. David moved and Joan seconded the motion for approval of the report of the treasurer. The motion passed.

Membership: Karen reported one renewal. This brings us up to 67 members.

We have been informed that Debbie Jones (Library Liaison) will no longer attend Friends meetings, but she will be available to assist in some capacity.

Lori will set up a meeting schedule with Ellen Firer.

The next weeding will be Thursday, December 22, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Joan Sculli will design badges with the first name of the volunteers at the book sale.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 4:30 PM at the Merrick Library. All Friends are welcome to attend.
