Minutes for the meeting of September 2013

Please find below the minutes for the Friends of the Merrick Library for September 2013. MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:37 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary) Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Shirley Sherwin and Joan Sculli. The minutes of the September meeting were read. Shirley moved their acceptance as read. Joan seconded the motion. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: Diane reported that our savings account has $2,066.47 and our checking account has $450.35. membership brought in $45.00, raffle brought in $25.00 and the book sale brought in $366.00. We received interest of $2.18. David moved acceptance of the report and Shirley seconded the motion. The motion passed. Old Business: Carol is purchasing stamps to send out membership renewal letters. The Merrick Library has printed our Friends brochure. We will pay the Merrick Library for printing them. We are requesting Sunday, March 30, 2014 for our Craft Fare at the Merrick Library. We are giving books to the Senior Center in Merrick to help replenish their supply which was devastated by Sandy. Next two meetings are Thursday, November 21, 2013 and Thursday, December 19, 2013. The meetings are held at the Merrick Library and begin at 4:30 PM. All Friends are invited to attend. August 2013 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair) and Shirley Sherwin. The July minutes were read. Carol moved and Marion seconded their approval as read. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: Diane called in the report of the treasurer prior to the meeting. Our savings account has $1,636.18 and our checking account has $450.35. One member renewal of $10, book sale $147.00 and the raffle brought in $32.00. Carol called the raffle winner. Shirley moved and Carol seconded approval of the report of the treasurer. The motion passed. Old Business: We would like a list of the Merrick Library Board so we can recruit them as members. In the past they have joined. Because the book sale will end this December, we need new fund raising ideas. A Craft show has been suggested. Saturday, December 14, 2013 has been reserved at the Merrick Library from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Shirley has agreed to develop a flyer for publicity purposes. Carol will contact Printing Emporium to ascertain a price for updated brochures to be used for membership expansion. New Business: The Book Fairy in Freeport accepts and distributes donated books. We may invite them to a future meeting. The Library Wing will be closed on Wednesday, September 4, 2013. Our next meeting will be Thursday, October 10, 2013 at the Merrick Library. The meeting begins at 4:30 PM. All Friends are invited to attend. In order to support the Merrick Library we need active members. June 27, 2013 Minutes

MINUTE FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JUNE 27, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary) and Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair). The minutes for the May meeting were read. Carol moved and Marion seconded their approval. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: Diane reported that the savings account has $2,227.18 and the checking has $450.00. The book sale brought in $333.00, the raffle $24.00, membership $25.00 and interest from the bank $1.16. David moved acceptance of the report and Carol seconded. The motion passed. Old Business: The two new museum passes totaling $1,050.00 was discussed. Carol moved and David seconded the motion to purchase them for the Merrick Library. The motion passed. Diane left the meeting to transfer the funds to the checking account. The check was left for the Library Director. We have been asked to submit our announcement for the Merrick Library newsletter. New Business: The friends have been asked to assist with two Teen book sales at the Merrick Library. These will be on Wednesday, July 24 and Wednesday, August 14, 2013. Lori and David have volunteered to assist in July and Carol has volunteered to assist in August. Friends meetings are scheduled for Thursday, July 25, August 22 and Thursday, October 17, 2013. May 2013 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, MAY 23, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:40 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Shirley Sherwin and Joan Sculli. The minutes of the April meeting were read. Shirley moved and Marion seconded that they be approved. The motion passed. Because Diane was not able to attend the meeting, Lori gave the report of the treasurer. Savings account $1,844.65 and checking account $450.35. The book sale brought in $232.00 raffle brought in $57.00 and membership brought in $40.00. David moved and Shirley seconded approval of the report. The motion passed. Old Business: The book sale brought in $95.00 this past week. The raffle winner was contacted by Carol. We are considering having coffee and conversation to stimulate the book sale to raise more funds to support the Merrick Library. We will contact Lois former Public Relations Chair for resources. Before paying for the two new museums we will request the number of visitors. If we cannot gather the statistics we will vote on their approval at our June meeting. New Business: We may try having a coffee shop one evening. Lori has done the paperwork and the Friends may receive funds from Better World Books. We may receive 5% of the proceeds from the bin near the wing. We need additional fund raising ideas. We will submit specific questions from the Friends to the Merrick Library Director so our relationship with the Merrick Library can be clarified. Please bring your questions to our June 27, 2013 meeting. Our next meeting is Thursday, June 27, 2013, at the Merrick Library. All meetings begin at 4:30 PM. All Friends are welcome to attend. April 2013 Minutes

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, APRIL 25, 2013 Carol Fontana opened the meeting at 4:40 PM. Present: “Carol Fontana (Vice President), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair), Shirley Sherwin and Joan Sculli. Lori Stayer was not feeling well enough to attend. Minutes of the March meeting were read. Shirley moved they be approved and Marion seconded the motion. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: In Diane’s absence David gave the report which Diane phoned in prior to the meeting. Savings account $7,401.48 and checking account $450.34. Book sale $$365 raffle $127.00 and interest accrued $1.16. David moved the report be approved and Joan seconded the motion. The motion passed. The winning raffle was drawn and Carol called the winner. Old Business: The Merrick Library has billed us for Museum Passes. There was an approved motion that this item be tabled since two museums were added which we have not approved. The luncheon for Monday, May 20, 2013 if it occurs will be a social event. Carol will explore the number of Friends willing to attend. New Business: There is a rumor that the Library Wing might be closed. This would eliminate our ongoing activity to raise funds to support and augment Library services. The Friends unanimously recommended that Lori request a meeting in writing with the Library Director to openly discuss the rumor and how the Library views the status of the Friends. Our next meeting is Thursday, May 23, 2013. All meetings begin at 4:30 PM and are held at the Merrick Library. All Friends are invited to attend. Since no further business came before the Friends, the meeting was adjourned at 5:20 PM.

February Minutes

MINUTES OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Jonathan Haas (Business Chair), Shirley Sherwin and Joan Sculli. The minutes for the January meeting were read. Joan moved and Diane seconded acceptance of the minutes. The motion passed. Report of the Treasurer: Diane gave the report. Savings account $6,970.16 checking account $450.00. The book sale brought in $333.00 since our last meeting. The raffle for the month brought in $84.00. Carol moved and Jonathan seconded acceptance of the report of the treasurer. The motion passed. Old Business: After some discussion we have decided to issue a certificate rather than a decal for the Businesses becoming members of the Friends. Carol will request that Art design the certificate. We will also work on a Friend’s membership flyer. Jonathan proposed that we ask the Merrick Library when issuing each museum pass to include a pamphlet recognizing the Friends for our purchasing the museum passes. He will draft the text for the pamphlet. New Business: We are considering having a membership drive Coffee Shop in June 2013. We would prefer a Sunday afternoon, but this will need to be discussed with the Director of the Merrick Library. Our attempt on a Wednesday evening in June of 2012 was a failure. Our next meeting is Thursday, March 21, 2013 at the Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 PM. Minutes of January 2013 Meeting

MINUTES FOR THE MEETING OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY THURSDAY, JANUARY 24, 2013 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:35 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), Carol Fontana (Vice President), Diane Christie (Treasurer), David R. Stayer (Secretary), Jonathan Haas (Business Chair) and Marion Ormsten (Correspondence Chair). The minutes from the December Friends meeting were read. Marion moved and Diane seconded their approval as read. The motion passed. Treasurer’s Report: Diane gave the report. Savings account $6,784.04 and checking account $450.25. Since our last meeting the book sale netted $276.00. David moved and Jonathan seconded approval of the report. The motion passed. New Business: Our new Vice President is Carol Fontana who is assuming volunteer coordination for the book sale. Merrick Life mistakenly billed the Merrick Friends for a full page ad. This has been corrected and the Friends of the North Merrick Library have been properly billed. Jonathan will continue as Business Chair but he will be employed as of February 1, 2013. Old Business: We need a Publicity Chair. The Friends fiscal year is from September 1 through August 31. We need to copy membership forms, update the officer status with the bank and development the business brochures. The Business Membership will commence once the brochures are sent. Our next meeting is Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Merrick Library beginning at 4:30 PM. All Friends are invited to attend. December minutes

MINUTES OF THE FRIENDS OF THE MERRICK LIBRARY MEETING THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2012 Lori Stayer opened the meeting at 4:45 PM. Present: Lori Stayer (President), David R. Stayer (Secretary) and Diane Christie (Treasurer). The minutes for our September meeting were read and approved. Report of the Treasurer: Diane reported our savings account has $6,369.02 and our checking account has $450.25. The report was approved. Old business: The book sale since September has netted $467.50. The raffle has netted $108.00. Five Business Memberships since September totaling $375.00. Because of the disaster of super storm Sandy, Karen Tusa has resigned as Vice President. She has done exemplary work for the Friends. We know that Karen and her husband will recover from Sandy’s devastation. Carol Fontana has been appointed Vice President according to the Bylaws of the Friends. Diane reported that our latest raffle netted $26.00. The winner has been notified. The next three meetings of the Friends are Thursday, January 24, 2013, Thursday, February 21, 2013 and Thursday, March 21, 2013 at 4:30 PM.
